The first claims
Charlie Nagreen sold a beef patty between two slices of bread at a fair in Wisconsin — and the Menches brothers made a similar claim in Ohio the same year.

Burgers became a hit at fairs and diners, and the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair helped make them famous all across the country.
The first burger chain
White Castle opened in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas, selling small five-cent burgers — the world's very first fast-food hamburger chain.
