🤔 Who Invented It?
No one knows for sure! Several people and restaurants say they invented the hamburger. Some famous claims include:
- Louis's Lunch says it served one of the first hamburgers in the 1900s.
- Charlie Nagreen is said to have sold a beef patty between two slices of bread at a fair in Wisconsin in 1885.
- Frank and Charles Menches claimed to have invented it in Ohio in 1885.
- Oscar Weber Bilby was said to have served the first burger on a real bun in Oklahoma in 1891.
Other cooks and food vendors in states like Texas, Wisconsin, and Ohio also claimed that they created it.
Fun fact: Louis's Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, is still serving burgers today and even claims to have invented them in 1900!
The truth? Most historians agree the burger was invented gradually by lots of different people — nobody can be named the single inventor, but we can all enjoy the result!
